Brief History
St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church is located in Roxbury Township, an active, thriving suburban community in the northwest region of Morris County, New Jersey (approximately one hour from New York City)

Roxbury, as it stands today, incorporates the communities of Succasunna, Kenvil, Ledgewood, Landing, Port Morris and Lower Berkshire Valley. It has a population of approximately 22,000 and covers 26 square miles. The township is located on the Morris Canal route and a Central Railroad branch. There is easy access to Interstate Route 80 and routes 46,10,15, and 206, all of which run through or are adjacent to our community.

With a busy commercial center located in Succasunna, the municipality offers the convenience of several shopping malls and professional buildings, while maintaining its hometown charm and the charm of its surrounding lakeside communities. Nearby is the International Trade Zone, home to numerous corporations and a new shopping center.

Education in Roxbury always strives to improve its excellence. The community has just passed a 25 million dollar referendum that will allow for much needed expansion in all five of our elementary schools. In addition, our schools will be reorganized to create four K-4 buildings feeding into one 5-6 complex.

These students then move on to the Eisenhower Middle School (Grade 7-8) and complete their public education at Roxbury High School. More than 89% of our high school graduates continue their education at two and four year colleges. Students in the Roxbury School System can also avail themselves of award -winning music and athletic programs.

Nearby recreational facilities provide healthful activities for children as well as adults. The area boasts many beautiful parks and lakes including Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey's largest lake. It features year-round recreational activities ranging from swimming and boating to skating and snowmobiling, as well as year-round fishing. The Horseshoe Lake complex in Succasunna offers swimming and fishing, as well as many seasonal sports activities. The magnificent Flanders Valley Golf Course is just a few minutes away.

Roxbury has its own police and fire departments. Our free public library is a member of the Morris Area Information Network. This gives library users quick access to the Internet, the worldwide web, and materials from a five-county region. In addition, the Roxbury Public Library sponsors many exciting and informative programs for children and adults alike.

Roxbury Township is proud to be home to all manner of civic-minded and church-oriented organizations, making it possible for each member of the community to take an active role in the township. Roxbury is home to an active Rotary club and a multi-denominational clergy council. Both organizations work very hard to better the community and meet the needs of its residents.

Roxbury has a proud history that predates many parts of the country. Our first inhabitants were the Lenne Lenape Indians. Later, our township was to play an important part in the American Revolution, supplying Washington's troops with gunshot and weapons.

A local church was used as a hospital during a smallpox epidemic at that time. The community was quick to respond to any situation and banded together as a whole to provide whatever was needed.

Today, we continue that strong sense of community in Roxbury, whether it is to help a single family in need or carry out a program on a larger scale. It begins when we wave to our neighbors….. And they wave right back!
